What started as a staple for coal miners in the 1920s, pepperoni rolls soon became a favorite snack of Italian families and those living in north-central West Virginia. Giuseppe “Joseph” Argiro, an Italian immigrant and coal miner opened the first commercial bakery in Fairmont and this delicious snack is still as popular as ever.

Craft Beer Trivia at The Rambling Root
Nona made pepperoni rolls for grandad’s lunch in the coal mines in West Virginia. She made a big batch after church and he was good for the week. The rolls laid in a wicker basket with a hand towel over them, so I assume they didn’t get stale for a week.
You know that there is more bread and pizza sauce than pepperoni and cheese 🧀,,,they are not that good ,,,, had some ,,,eat some ,,, never eat them again,,, here in west virginia,,,😮😮😮😮,,,,
We call that Stromboli in NYC. They also call them pepperoni rolls. They also make sausage rolls and chicken rolls
Focus on your States WV Hotdog.... I lived in WV for 2 years....I kept trying different Pepperoni Rolls to see what all of the fuss was about It's just boring bread and pepperoni. I didn't get it
Just happened upon your video. I am from Fairmont and have made pepperoni rolls from Rhoads Texas rolls. I might try it using frozen bread dough. Your method of rolling them out made bigger rolls. I might try it. I get them at Country Club Bakery when I get that way. Thanks for posting this!

Colasessano's was the best of the best with their pepperoni rolls...one was a meal and so good.
Donut Spot in Buckhannon always the best. Them pepperoni sticks are trash compared to the minced peppies
Nicely done video. I like how they just showed the pepperoni rolls and what goes into them, and a little bit of history. No fluff, just how I like it. I'm from Michigan, and I've never had anything like this, and I'm very curious about it. Maybe I'll try making my own.
Wetzel county schools had the best pepperoni rolls ever. Say different, we fight.
This is cousin to the “pizza roll,” which has been in our family for two generations.
calzone?
NO
Love the mushrooms in video
Mannington WV. Wooohooooo
We stop at Collasessanos everytime we get neat Fairmont. Good childhood memories , they were my birthday cake!
Morris Park is amazing and has a world class disc golf 1 2 course combo, Seth Burton and Orange Crush.
My Aunt Helen used to make the best pepperoni rolls in Grafton, West Virginia. While my siblings and cousins were eating candy and Easter eggs, I was devouring pepperoni rolls. Even though I am now allergic to pork, I miss those days.
Been there several times. Great place to visit. The second fort he alluded to, I believe, is Fort Randolph at Pt. Pleasant, WV. This is a military fort. This fort is where Chief Cornstalk was murdered.
"So..." for the third time. (Sorry, but out of respect for my college speech teacher, I needed to say this.)
American cuizine it's worts than barf. Disgusting🤢🤮
THESE LOOK SO DELICIOUS
Not true. I grew up with them in Detroit. Love them.
Any good Italian bakery in Tri state area will have them but with cheese inside. But I need to try a West Virginia one
Sorry WV,but surely you could do better than this. It's so boring and forgettable..... Been here 6 months and keep trying different ones because I'm trying to understand why they are popular. Find a better food to represent you.
Microwave for 15 seconds. Gets the pepperoni juice into the bread.
Great edit!
very cool, I never knew they were first made in Fairmont for the miners.
Stick pepperoni only ! Seal in the goodness in the dough !!! That’s a true , pepperoni roll !
Fairmont= Bedroom Community. They don't want businesses there.
My family always made pepperoni rolls by wrapping circle pepperonis, white cheese, and yellow cheese in the dough, although I imagine pepperoni sticks wouldn't be bad!
Fairmont native! Great video!
nice content MarionCVB. I shattered that thumbs up on your video. Maintain up the wonderful work.
no gloves no way
You've never worked in a restaurant or bakery, have you?
Can scratch my ass with gloves on too. Nobody in a real bakery wears gloves unless the cameras are on, makes you look like an asshole.
Some of their accents aren't as thick as I thought it would be. Maybe that's typical for the northern part of the state.
Spider
Sorry, not invented in wv, try Calabria italy
i thought pepperoni was an american thing - not really "authentic" italian. i'm sure somebody in calabria baked cured meat into bread dough a long time ago but i think pepperoni rolls would be a separate thing
No one cares you guinea
It was invented in WV by an Italian immigrant for miners to carry easily underground… also fun fact, tomatoes/tomatoe sauce is not native to Italy but has its roots in the Americas with most likely Aztecs being the first source, then being brought to Italy.
I've never seen it made that way.
For me it's italian bread dough wrapped around stick pepperoni...nothing else. I'm from Maryland, but went to college at Ohio Valley University (Parkersburg, WV), then WVU. I had never eaten one till my first year in school when I was 19 (1993). I make a trip to Parkersburg at least once or twice a year, and always bring plenty back with me to share with my family and friends.
I'll send you the recipe so you can save some money and time driving...
Heh, I used to live in Parkersburg; moved to Hawaii in 2013, just received some pepperoni rolls in the mail from Fairmont today. First I've had since I moved here, first time my husband (from Alaska) ever had one; he was surprised at how good it was, for being just bread and pepperoni sticks.
@@kenhollis6197 your timing couldn't be more perfect...I'm visiting friends in Parkersburg for the first time in 7 years (friends not Pkbg). Day 2 I had fresh from the bakery, still warm pepperoni rolls! So good...
Hello!! Just subbed to your channel! Have you ever thought about using smzeus . c o m to promote your videos??
The pepperoni roll was invented by Giuseppe "Joseph" Argiro at the Country Club Bakery in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1927. My dad Enrico Trotta went to high school with Mr. Argiro's son - Frank "CHEECH" Argiro! He used to give us kids free ones as we visited Fairmont, West Virginia. They are the best - pepperoni rolls! We make them at home using my grandmother's bread & pizza recipe for the dough.
My grandfather is 85 years old and still lives in Fairmont. Lots of stories from those very old times.
@@zachayes6298 Thank you for sharing and I wish you and your grandfather the best! Very Scenic and hilly there.
You know, I lived in Southern WV for 21 years and went to WVU for 4 years and that is north & south and I never even heard of pepperoni rolls
guess what once I moved to WV from NY and im from Europe I heard abt pepperoni rolls right away, dude u never seen them at the gas stations? they r everywhere....just saying. Ur from WW but u have no idea abt ur state, that is sad.
@Dmac 740 No, they don't. It's not a Hot Pocket or some sort of a strombolli. The snack is unique to places lime West Virginia and Western Maryland.
Me niether!
I was born in southeastern Ohio, right on the river, WV was a short drive away; pepperoni rolls were baked fresh in multiple bakeries on both sides of the river. Maybe they didn't reach everywhere.
2:13 "it's a good'a show"
I can remember my 1st pizza from the original Colasessano's Pizza in 1982 located in Fairmont. My best friend and college room mate at Fairmont State took me there for takeout. It was so thick and cheesy and seemed like it weighed a ton. If my memory serves me correct, it came in a white looking shirt box style box.
Pepperoni rolls are pretty ubiquitous in Eastern Ohio. A life without Pepperoni Rolls is not a life fully lived😀
Yes, in the Appalachia region of Ohio has pepperoni rolls. I was born in WV and lived in Kenna. Pepperoni rolls r the best!
@@nathanielfoster6792 I'll drink to that! By the way, what beverage do you recommend with a pepperoni roll?
popolar hear in northeast ohio.
Most Pizza shops in Columbiana County make them
Lol anyone find it funny that this is a West Virginia themed video and the length is 304?
Bo Milam hah! Great observation Bo! I missed that.
Great video --- should make it longer like 6 mins and 81 seconds !!!!
Fuck you asshole
It just goes to show that at least people in West Virginia are adults and you guys are very childish and foolish
Dumbasses
There's a store in Ohio I go to that sells pepperoni rolls.
MrSRArter Where?
Angie Drainer Benson's in Tuscarawas County
Country club sucks. Try Kroger brand!
Sarcasm at its finest.
Fool
@@frechstudios3129 pretty sad isn't it they're making fun of West Virginia and that's all the more intelligent they are you got it dude sarcasm at its finest hahaha
I prefer Tomaros
No mention of Clarksburg pepperoni rolls and nothing about Senator Byrd's contribution.
Jim Goldsmith it's about the original article which was first done in Fairmont , at least to serve the public. I'm from Clarksburg and yes we have the best of all Italian food and pepperoni rolls and pizza. Someone should do THAT story. I miss crossing the bridge into Glen Elk on Sunday mornings, windows down, oh that wonderful smell of fresh baking bread! Tomaro's! Yes I'll take two loaves of bread and two dozen pepperoni rolls please. I've been displaced in Texas now for some 33 years so I have to make my own now. Yes I have an original recipe from Clarksburg. My neighbors and friends here love them!!
@@scottt3100You can order Tomaro's pepperoni rolls online. But with shilling, kind of expensive. I get a coulpe dozen every Christmas. I was raised in Clarksburg but now in SC.
